Remembering Mohamed Rafi, the one with the Golden Voice!
(24.12.1924- 31.07.1980)

It happened 34 years ago, on 31 July 1980 -- most of us remember what we were doing when that sad news hit the airwaves and music lovers still mourn him, Mohamed Rafi, the one with the golden voice!Words dance to his voice and the listeners go on a journey to heaven, and I can only think of one other, who can accomplish all this with his voice and that of course is,Yesudas! Mohamed Rafi has given us thousands of songs spanning over a period of 35 years, to the music of many of the great musicians such as Noushad, S D Burnman, R D Burman, O P Nayyar, Shyam Sundar, Bombay Ravi, Shankar Jaikishan, Laxshmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Salil Choudhury, and the words of legends like Shakeel Badayuni, Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Anand Bakshi became classics! "O Duniya ke Rakhwale" from 'Baiju Bawra is such a Powerful classic that it brings tears to the listener's eyes, especially while watching the visual!

Shyam Sundar brought Rafi to music and his first film song was in Punjabi, “Aaja mere soniye”, but it was Noushad who brought Rafi to the masses and that was only the start – who can forget 'Madhuban me Radhika nache re' (Music Naushad Lyrics Shakeel) from 'Kohinoor'?! There was a time when songs such as "Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko kisiki nazar na lage", "Baharon Phool Barsao" (Music: Shankar Jaikishan; Lyricist: Hasrat Jaipuri), 'Ye mera prem pathru patkar thum naaras na hona and "Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein ((Music Shankar-Jaikishan and Lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri"); Chouduvin ka chand ho (Music: Ravi and Lyricist: Shakeel Badayuni) 'Teri Aankhom ke siva (Music: Madan Mohan; Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri), "Chahoonga Main Tujhe saanj savere (Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri), Kya hua tere vaada (Music:R D Burman and Lyrics byMajrooh Sultanpuri), 'Jhoole ne do nazuk' (Lyricist: Sahir Ludhianvi and Music: Ravi), Toote huve khwabon ne Ham ko ye sikhaya hai' (Lyrics: Shailndra Music: Salil Choudhury) and 'Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hai' (Music: Sachin Dev Burman; Lyricist: Shailendra) were on everyone's lips! And of course, “Gungun arahe hai' and Bagon mein bahar hai' (Music: S D Burman and Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni) from 'Aradhana'!

Few among my favourites are 'Suhani Raat dhal chukki na jane thum kab aaoge' from the film Dulari, written by Shakeel Badayuni and the music by Noushad, another breath taking song written by Shakeel Badayuni in Bombay Ravi's music, that takes you to heaven: "Chaudhuvin Ka Chand Ho" from the film 'Chaudhuvin Ka Chand', 'Tere mere sapne ab ek rang he', Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko", "Baharon Phool Barsao", 'Teri Aankhom ke siva, "Aaja tujhko pukare Mera pyar" (Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi and Music: Bombay Ravi) from 'Neelkamal', 'Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil Mere Kaam Ki Nahi' (Music: Madan Mohan and Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi) from 'Heer Raanjha', "Chahoonga Main Tujhe saanj savere; Gungun arahe hai' and Bagon mein bahar hai' from 'Aradhana'; 'Tere mere sapne ab ek rang he', to name a few, of course! A special mention for this beauty from 'Neelkamal': "Aajaa Tujhko pukare Mera pyar": Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi and Music: Bombay Ravi: Rafi brings in the deep melancholic emotion so much that the song tugs at your heart bringing the listener to tears, and if you watch the film, the depth of his voice and Raajkumar's brilliant acting merge, making it a power-packed viewing!

He is no more, but his golden voice is very much live in our hearts and will remain so for eternity -- his golden voice has the quality of untouched honey and it has the fragrance of heaven and all the rose petals in this world! May his soul rest in peace, while we continue our musical journey laced with his inimitable voice!
