18.02.2014: Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, was assassinated 23 years ago, and today, the Indian Supreme Court reduces the 'Death Sentence' of his killers to 'Life Imprisonment'!

It is a sad day for the law abiding citizens of this Country and around the globe! Indian Supreme Court shows leniency to the death sentences of the three killers of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to life imprisonment, citing delay of 23 years after he was assassinated by a 'Tamil Suicide Bomber' in 1991! The supreme Court, in a landmark ruling last month had placed restrictions on execution of condemned prisoners! Chief Justice P Sathasivam told the court in announcing the judgement, “We implore the government to render advice in a reasonable amount of time for taking a decision on mercy pleas”!

What about 'Justice' for Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on 21 May in 1991?! So, does this judgement mean that all one has to do is kill anyone, no matter who it is, or gang-rape women and children, and then get the verdict delayed somehow and stay in the jail at the expense of the taxpayers for a few years, and then expect a leniency!! Rajiv Gandhi too had the right to live, who had so much more to give to our country, but was taken from us by these criminals at the prime of his life! Does anyone think of his family, especially the ones who are applauding this decision by the Supreme Court? One likes to believe that the Supreme Court is above 'Political Influence', but One is not sure anymore!

Is it going to be the start of things to come, for the gang-rape criminals and the likes too?! Punishment must fit the crime, implemented without delay and a lesson for the criminals -- but I don't think this judgement does it! I feel for all those who are the real victims who suffer, including the victims' families who lost their loved ones, loss of life, and loss of dignity and a 'Living Death' for those who survive the rape and the emotional and health complications following it!

It sends out a message that killing even the Prime minister of this Country, or committing any severe barbaric crime such as 'Gang-rape or Gang-rape and murder' is justifiable enough to expect a lenient punishment, if spent time in a jail where life is rather comfortable, as they are given free accommodation, food , etc, at the expense of the taxpayers of this country, who work very hard for a living! The judgement is also a reminder to the Government and the Presidents, who delayed the decision on the mercy plea in this case for 11 years, that decisions must be taken without delay to avoid this kind of a judgement!
