There are many dedicated people who spend many long hours to bring a bit of happiness and pain relief to millions of people suffering from diseases such as Cancer, AIDS, severe arthritis, etc. This is the day when we should acknowledge their work and honour them. It is very important to organize various activities to make it a day for laughter and fun for those who are suffering and those who care for them -- and one should not forget to spread the awareness about Palliative Care and the honourable work they are doing!

There are various activities organized in Thiruvananthapuram, the Capital City of Kerala. Mr Oommen Chandy, the Chief Minister of Kerala has sent out a message on this day, honouring the people who care for those who are suffering from debilitating diseases, and urged the public to be aware of the pain and neglect our fellow beings go through and to do something about it!. “World Palliative Care Day 2011 is celebrated around the world on 8 October. There are millions of people in this world who are suffering from the debilitating ill effects of diseases such as cancer and AIDS due to neglect. It is highly commendable that this organization is bringing comfort and compassion to these people.

Let us celebrate this day by remembering those who have dedicated their lives to care for these patients, and to organize functions and fun fare activities to make it a day of ‘Fun and laughter’ to these long suffering fellow beings -- it is also a day to bring awareness among the public!

I am extremely happy that the District Panchayats, Kerala Social Security Mission, Pallium India and Kudumbasree have joined together to organize the celebrations in Thiruvananthapuramon on 8 October 2011 for the World Palliative Care Day! I know there are lot of people who work long hours to bring comfort and happiness to these patients who live with excruciating pain and disability. It is only just that we acknowledge their valuable contribution and honour them.

I hope that the celebration will be a grand success! Best Wishes for the World Palliative Care Day celebrations on 8 October 2011!“
